Women in Construction
Paige Burns attended the event, Women In Construction, at the Jacobite Center at Northern Michigan’s University along with 100 other young women from the Upper Peninsula ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade. This event is called Women In Construction. There were multiple schools attending and several projects for the students to do.
The students from all around the Upper Peninsula received a T-shirt to change into when they arrived at Northern Michigan University. Each student created a mirror frame, in which they mounted a mirror. They also welded a base to a name plate personalized just for them. The students from the Upper Peninsula also learned how to make 3D models of a picture using computers and a 360 degree camera.
When making their mirrors the students had to cut, measure, and nail all of the pieces together. There were some volunteers helping the students, however they still allowed the students to do most of the work. The students also got to design, set up and build their own city. Of course they did not actually build a city, they used Legos. The students had to calculate how much the roads would cost per mile, how much untouched land they had to have, and how many houses and apartments they had to have to have a working and stable economy.
At the end of the day, they gave the students subs, chips, an apple, and a cookie for lunch and all of the students either received a water bottle or they got to choose what they wanted from the prizes, if their names were called.
The Women in Construction event has been going on since 2017 however they did not have it in 2020 because of the Covid Pandemic.
